Visual Storytelling

[threecol_one]There are people in your life who are growing up, moving forward, and even aging. YOU are growing up, moving forward, and aging, too, through a series of small and big events, from elementary school graduation to work and deepening friendships, successes and losses and hopefully love, some of it building you up and some of it setting you back.

Whoosh! It’s a life all moving forward without stop.

But there is a way to go back for a visit.[/threecol_one][threecol_two_last]

Tell Your Stories on the Scrapbook Page

Scrapbooking is personal storytelling that incorporates something written memoir does not: VISUAL elements. If you are a scrapbooker, you are a Visual Storyteller.

In the five days of “Visual Storytelling,” elevate your scrapbook page storytelling by applying visual design elements to the story structures that rose out of oral and written storytelling traditions:

  • Visually represent all of the layers that make a resonant story.
  • Include details that evoke the key elements of classic stories.
  • Develop a facility with the scrapbooking and design tools available for making both concrete events and abstract feelings more visually compelling and resonant.
What you get with Visual Storytelling

Each day you receive: a short, actionable pdf lesson with challenges for learning the skills of visual storytelling, a video lesson, access to a live event with guest designer (and recording after). Chat in the community forums about your discoveries, and ask questions and share at the daily live webinars. We’ll have recordings of all live events. You may submit questions the morning of the event if you can’t attend live.

While we’d love to have you working alongside us the week of June 6, you could also time-shift and do it on your own later. The lessons, videos, live event recordings and community will all remain in place. BUT you must get a membership or purchase the event by June 6, 2016.

The five-day agenda

Mon, June 6: Elements and Layers of Story and Tools for Visual Storytelling
9am ET pdf and video   |   12 pm EDT live webinar with Wilna Furstenberg (recording provided after)

This lesson lays out the layers and elements of story, and then shows you the tools you have for visually replicating those pieces. Well-known stories are broken down to make these elements clear, and layout examples show you how it’s done on the scrapbook page.

Tues, June 7: Visual Storytelling with Photos
9am ET pdf and video   |   4 pm EDT live webinar with Anna Aspnes (recording provided after).

Photos are one of the tools you have for visual storytelling. Understand the kinds of photos that can be used to get at the layers and elements presented in lesson 1. More than a dozen scrapbook pages show you creative approaches for storytelling with photo crops, edits, technique and presentation.

Wed, June 8: Visual Storytelling with Design Elements
9am ET pdf and video   |   7pm EDT live webinar with Jill Sprott (recording provided after).

Design elements include color, texture, pattern, value, shape, line, and size (proportions). Understand the choices that will not only tell stories but help you evoke a sense of the 2nd and 3rd layers of a story: feelings and universal themes. Over a dozen layouts show you exactly how this works.

Thurs, June 9: Visual Storytelling with Image and Type
9am ET pdf and video   |  2 pm EDT  live webinar with Stacy Julian (recording provided after).

Motif, typeface, and styling are essential to cuing obvious story elements and for enlarging on character, setting and theme and for evoking the mood that will get your viewers understanding what it is to be you or your main character. See a variety of approaches play out in 12+ annotated layouts.

Fri, June 10: Visual Storytelling with Layout Format and Design
9am ET pdf and video   |   1 pm EDT live webinar with Amy Kingsford (recording provided after).

Options for visual story structure and the application of design principles make it possible to tell a story with a chronology in a single piece: a scrapbook page. From basic approaches to unexpectedly creative angles described in over a dozen layouts, your complete toolkit for visual storytelling is now revealed.

Five master scrapbook-page storytellers join our daily live events, sharing their pages and visual storytelling approaches as they relate to the day’s lesson. We’ve got both paper and digital scrapbookers in this group–but it really doesn’t matter whether they work with glue or pixels for this class because what we are talking about is storytelling with photos, journaling, color, shape, composition and more–no matter the medium used.

Your guide, host, and teacher for Visual Storytelling

headshotflippedI’m Debbie Hodge. I have an MBA with a concentration in operations management, and I’ve studied creative writing for over 20 years. I’m passionate about recording memories with image and words and sharing approaches for doing this well.

For the last 9 years, I’ve owned and taught at Get It Scrapped.com. I’ve worked with 100+ designers in the scrapbook industry, including recording over 250 hours of interviews with them. The result is an understanding of visual storytelling, the many forms it takes, and and the techniques needed to get it on the page.

I write the lessons, create the videos, develop the interviews, and interact with you in our private community during the 5-day event, “Visual Storytelling.” Many of the scrapbook pages illustrating the lessons in Visual Storytelling were made by our membership guest teachers.[divider_flat]
