It’s not a story until it’s been told
If you’re like me, there are people in your life who are growing up, moving forward, and even aging. YOU are growing up, moving forward, and aging, too, through a series of small and big events, from elementary school graduation to work and deepening friendships, successes and losses and hopefully love, some of it building you up and some of it setting you back. Whoosh! It’s a life all moving forward without stop.
BUT. . . It doesn’t happen that simply or quickly. Let’s rewind to the uneventful days passing alongside days full of incidents, incidents that make up your life story and that of your family. When you take the time to record these things happening in your life, they become something grander: they become stories.
A story is different from an actual occurrence.
It’s when you recount (or scrapbook) an occurrence, that it becomes a story. And that story has your imprint–revealing not only what happened but also what it feels like to be you as it happened. Done well, with visual techniques applied to classic story structures, this story will even convey why this story and your feelings matter and what it’s like to be a part of this world.
In the novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien wrote: Stories are for joining the past to the future. Stories are for those late hours in the night when you can’t remember how you got from where you were to where you are. Stories are for eternity, when memory is erased, when there is nothing to remember except the story.
Scrapbookers are Visual Storytellers
Scrapbooking is personal storytelling that incorporates something written memoir does not: VISUAL elements. If you are a scrapbooker, you are a Visual Storyteller.
In the five lessons of “Visual Storytelling,” elevate your scrapbook page storytelling by applying visual design elements to the story structures that rose out of oral and written storytelling traditions:
- Visually represent all of the layers that make a resonant story.
- Include details that evoke the key elements of classic stories.
- Develop a facility with the scrapbooking and design tools available for making both concrete events and abstract feelings more visually compelling and resonant.

Photos are one of the tools you have for visual storytelling. Understand the kinds of photos that can be used to get at the layers and elements presented in lesson 1. More than a dozen scrapbook pages show you creative approaches for storytelling with photo crops, edits, technique and presentation.
Lesson 3: Visual Storytelling with Design Elements

I’m Debbie Hodge. I have an MBA with a concentration in operations management, and I’ve studied creative writing for over 20 years. I’m passionate about recording memories with image and words and sharing approaches for doing this well.
For the last 6 years, I’ve owned and taught at Get It Scrapped.com. I’ve worked with over 50 designers in the scrapbook industry, including recording over 250 hours of interviews with them. The result is an understanding of visual storytelling, the many forms it takes, and and the techniques needed to get it on the page.
I wrote the lessons, created the videos, developed the interviews, and hosted the live events. Over 200 scrapbook pages pages illustrate the lessons in Visual Storytelling and were made by our membership guest teachers.
