MIXING PATTERNED PAPER | Selfie Time by Debbie Hodge

Mix pattern motifs.

Mixed patterns don’t need to match. Rather, they need to coordinate with and complement each other. Mixing motifs is a really great opportunity to play with meanings, both direct and associative.

On this page featuring photos of her nieces dressed for a wedding shower and taking photos of themselves, Debbie Hodge worked in juxtapositions in pattern, motif, and styling to highlight the juxtaposition of these pretty girls on a leafy porch with the modern habit of taking “selfies” — especially since the camera case is a shaped like a cartoon bear and feels out of place in the portrait.

A clean trellis print is combined with a vintage floral print and a contemporary text print. The clean trellis provides a backdrop while the other motifs are in smaller pieces. The combination tells a story of today and of pretty traditions–like wedding showers and setting on the porch.
