Choose patterns for story and design impact.
On her page about a failed attempt to make a ombre-died skirt, Lisa Farquharson mixed a number of patterned papers in a quilt-inspired design, mixing modern and vintage patterns.
Here she’s got florals, plaids, polka-dots, and a doily print. Starting with the outermost print (blue doilies), work your way inward and notice the variation between large scale motifs and smaller, tighter motifs.
Notice that the polka-dot print at the center and the plaid print are multi-colored while the rest of the patterned papers are two-toned or tone-with-neutral–which makes for easier successful pattern mixing.
