CHOOSING PATTERNED PAPER | Good Times by Kim Watson

Choose patterns to support your photos.

As you select your papers, think about your photos. How many photos do you have? What are their colors and how complex are they? If you’ve got busy photos, think about using subtler (and fewer) patterns. The goal is to avoid visual clutter and to make the layout pleasing and understandable to the viewer.

The patterned papers on Kim Watson’s “Good Times” support her photos’ and even make it so they stand out on the page.

Themewise, the flags of red-and-white stripes trigger associations of boats and the sea.

Visually, Kim’s photos are full of blues and whites and pop against a design of red and yellow geometrics. They are small photos and fill less than a quarter of the canvas. They are also predominantly blue–a color with less weight than the warmer red and yellow. And, yet, they are the focal point of the page because of the contrast. It’s a beautiful page full of pattern and shape but focused on the photos and story.
