Choose patterns for their visual weight and balance on the page.
Pay attention to how much visual weight different prints have. Could your patterned paper contribute to or detract from your desired emphasis? Be aware of how prints affect overall page balance.
Lisa Dickinson has deftly included four different prints in four different colors here. They’re placed in four rows and four columns.
The focal point her is the title, made so by its isolation and simplicity in contrast with the paper and photo block.
The photos are the secondary focus on the page, and this is achieved by the consistency of their dark background and their placement in a column.
While the patterned paper blocks are shuffled in the design, with a seemingly random placement, notice how their placements are spaced out to create balance in the reds, the greens, the blues and the grays.
