MIXING PATTERNED PAPER | Mama Duck by Leah Farquharson

Mix print in gallon-quart-pint proportions.

The idea of “gallon-quart-pint” portions is a great ratio to hold in your mind as you mix the elements of a pattern (color, motif, scale, density). Use your primary item (color or form or scale or density) in a “gallon” quantity and then use other elements in portions that are relatively “quart” and “pint” sized

Check out the pattern proportions on Leah Farquharsons’ “Mama Duck.”

The bold ornamental background print is her “gallon” pattern. The green-and-white polka-dot print and the gold woodgrain banner strip are both used in a “quart” proportion, and the small black-and-white chevron bit is the “pint” proportion in her mix.
